9/11 Media Request 01/14

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Dear 9/11 Family Member:,

The daily news show of RTL Dutch Television is currently looking for 9/11
families in New York who lost a loved one during the 9/11 attacks and are
willing to discuss with us the upcoming trial of the suspected terrorists in
New York. We are looking for both sides of the spectrum. We have spoken with
a mother who lost her son in the attacks who is in favor of the trial being
in New York and we are now looking for people who heavily oppose it.

RTL Dutch Television is the largest commercial broadcaster in The
Netherlands and part of the RTL group, Europe’s largest television network.
Our daily news show attracts about 2 million viewers daily. Our headquarters
are in the Netherlands but for the coverage of US Stories we have an office
in New York, from which I am writing this.

If you’d be willing to help in this matter, please contact me on the
following number 212-975-6484 or send me an email at producer@rtltv.us.

Thank you,

Nona Hurkmans

WTC FAMILY ROOM

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

SENDING ON BEHALF OF NORMA MANIGAN –

Hello Friends,

I hope you are all having a blessed holiday season and staying warm. I think it is too early for this much snow but what do I know!

So our news and our new project concerns the WTC family room. As you know, it has moved around the site several times to accommodate the construction. It currently sits on a lot two blocks south of the World Trade Center. The Port Authority rented that empty lot to use for the family room and other construction-related housing. The owner of the lot told the Port Authority that we will not be able to renew our agreement with him and we are currently working out the dates for removal of our property. The construction needs are being housed in offices at Nassau Street.

One suggestion is to move the family room - in tact - to hangar 17 at JFK where it is climate-controlled and secured and would be available for family visits. Although Chris Ward has given us the task to reduce the amount material in hangar 17, he has agreed to house the family room there. However, we do need to decide on a final disposition for the room and its content. This is your room and we certainly don’t want to be the ones making this decision.

This option would be that the Port Authority would move the family room to the hangar 17 and secure it there while we set up a committee of family members to research options and decide what will happen to the room and its contents. A decision on the ultimate disposition of the room would have to be made by September of 2010 and the room moved out of hangar 17 by September 2011.

Let me know if you have any questions, if you want to serve on the committee, or if you have any other options that we can consider.

Thanks, as always

WE NEED A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

To All,

Over the past 8 years we have done many things that people said could not be done.

I now ask you for one more favor.

Please read the e-mail below.

Kerry is a good friend of mine who has done countless great things for our community.

Let’s try for a Christmas miracle and get him a donor.

Please pass this on to all your distributions and list serves.

Let’s blanket the country through Facebook and other social media outlets.

“Those who don’t believe in miracles, don’t believe in themselves”

I believe in miracles and I believe in you.

Let’s do this for Kerry

Dennis

——————————————————————————–

Hello Everyone…….

It’s easier to do an e-mail blast like this, rather then to try to explain it over the telephone, and break down every time I have to tell this story……….as it stands right now, I am not eligible for a Liver Transplant, as I do not have “Liver Disease”, I have “liver cancer”, which does not fit the criteria for a liver transplant from the national transplant organization ……… How I made it through life without a liver disease, amaze’s even me !

Since my liver is in perfect condition, and working, I cannot get on the liver transplant list, I have to find my own Donor….. Problem #2:……. Me being of Irish decent, I have O Positive blood type, the hardest to find. So I have to ask one of you for a donation of a piece of your liver …………

The type of cancer I have is extremely aggressive : hepacellular carcinoma…… 20 months ago, it grew from 3 centimeters to half my liver in two week’s time……..It’s growing fast again, I go in to Mount Sinai on Tuesday for what is called an Hepatic Arterial Chemoembolization (whew, big word!) …….

What that is, is this…. they will put a fiber optic tube in to my liver through my groin area, in to my liver, they will burn the cancer, radiate it, then encapsulate it in a chemo to keep it from spreading into my bloodstream, if the cancer gets into my blood, I am dead…….period

This will last about 2 months, then the cancer will start to break through it, and I will have to have it done again, and again…

So, I need to ask all of you, to consider giving me a piece of your liver….. an e-mail is a little impersonal , but it has been so hard on me, saying this over and over on the telephone to those of you I have spoken with so far…..that I have to do it this way, Vicky walks around crying every time I make a phone call, and it just adds to the difficulty in explaining the situation

You would be in the hospital for 3 days, and would have to take it easy for one week……..your missing piece will grow back within 30 days…….. Since our blood type is so hard to get a donor from, the surgeon will also use a small piece of your liver, and implant it in an yet, unknown baby. You will save two live’s ………..

You can be any type “O” blood, Plus or Minus, and must be younger then 55 years old…………The donation does not have to be from a family member, it can be from anyone with “O” Type blood

I have CC’ed some of my friends at the Natural Resources Protective Association and some of our compatriots in this e-mail, as it really is difficult explaining this time and time again. So I had to inform them about this, In this e-mail too ……

Thanks……..

ANGELS CIRCLE NEEDS SOME ANGELS

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

To All,

I received a call from Wendy Pelligrino today.

It appears that there was an electrical fire at Angels Circle that caused some damage and will require the replacement of the utility pole as well as some major electrical work.

The total cost will be well over $1,500.

As you know Angels Circle is probably the most personal 9/11 memorial in the world.

And Wendy maintains it and holds ceremonies for the 9/11 families and never asks anything in return.

Well here is our chance to help her out.

I have asked her to forward the full details so that I can pass them along.

In the meantime Sam Esposito has donated $500 from his son’s foundation and Where to Turn will match that donation.

In this season of giving I ask all of my friends to make a small donation to cover the remainder of the costs and to allow Wendy to continue to honor our lost loved ones with her great work at Angels Circle.

No contribution is too small

Donations can be made payable to

Angels Circle

And sent care of

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Memo to 911 Families

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Dear Families,

Please note that a suspect was apprehended earlier at the 13th precinct this evening and confessed to setting the fire. The chapel itself, upon further inspection, did not suffer as much damage as feared and benches, statues and some posters remain intact.

We will continue with updates as information becomes apparent.

Sincerely,

Nazli Parvizi and Christy Ferer

Nazli

HEARTS AND HANDS INTERVIEWS

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Dear Friends,

Over the next few weeks we would like to conduct a few interviews with family members, 9/11 organizational leaders and elected officials about the Hearts and Hands Memorial.

We really need to make people realize how important this is.

If you would like to help us out please let me know.

I have new brochures detailing our plans and will have them tomorrow after the ceremony.

Give me a call at 718-619-2371 and I will find you.

We really need to get this moving so that we can have it completed by the 10th Anniversary.

You will be in my thoughts tomorrow.

NO QUILT ON 9/11……MAYBE NOT

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

To All,

I was just about to send out an e-mail telling you that we had finally thrown in the towel.

Our interview with a local newscast was cancelled and it looked like I had no “Where to Turn”

As I was about to hit the send key I received a call from the news station and they want to do the interview tomorrow.

So we still have a shot to get the word out.

I want people to realize that:

We can spend millions on campaigns.

We can create media events to promote movies or to honor visiting dignitaries.

But for over six months we could not find space to display a memorial that truly honors those we lost on 9/11 in a very personal way.

A quilt made up of over 3,000 patches from people from all over the world each bringing to life the individual victim they represent.

And while 9/11 showed how hatred bares severe consequences this quilt serves as an example of how the global outpouring of love and tolerance can supersede any future acts of hate, by spreading goodness and decency throughout the world.

That is why we need it displayed at Ground Zero on 9/11

Eight years ago almost everyone was stating that we must never forget.

Unfortunately it appears too many have.

Hopefully other media outlets will follow the lead of this local news station and help us spread the word.

There has to be someone with space for us.

We need to get this done.

Dennis

P.S. If you have any ideas please give me a call at 718-966-6531

COMMEMORATE 9/11 THROUGH ACTS OF SERVICE

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday, August 27, 2009

NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM AND MYGOODDEED ANNOUNCE COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP TO ENCOURAGE PUBLIC TO COMMEMORATE 9/11
THROUGH ACTS OF SERVICE
9/11 Memorial Creates New Educational Materials to Encourage Youth Service

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum and MyGoodDeed today announced a collaborative partnership to encourage the public to commemorate 9/11 through acts of service. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is also making available commemorative educational materials to help encourage volunteerism among students.

“Tremendous acts of compassion and sacrifice characterized the events of 9/11,” said Joe Daniels, President & CEO of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. “The 9/11 Memorial & Museum will preserve the story of September 11, 2001, and its aftermath and strive to inspire acts of service. We look forward to working with MyGoodDeed to encourage people across the country to mark the 9/11 anniversary with both reflection and action.”

“Our mission and that of the 9/11 Memorial are wonderfully compatible, in the way we both seek to create a permanent legacy that forever pays tribute to the victims of 9/11 and their families, and honors those who rose in service in response to the attacks,” said David Paine, president of MyGoodDeed, the nonprofit that led the seven year effort to establish 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Paine co-founded the organization in 2003 with friend Jay Winuk, who lost his brother Glenn Winuk, an attorney and volunteer EMT who was lost in the collapse of the World Trade Center south tower.

The announcement was made at a press conference today as MyGoodDeed and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum joined with other national service organizations in launching a nationwide effort to promote 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Under the collaborative relationship, the 9/11 Memorial and MyGoodDeed will support one another’s missions through educational and promotional initiatives.

This year MyGoodDeed will help raise awareness of the 9/11 Memorial’s commemorative educational materials, The Spirit of Volunteerism: 9/11 and Beyond. The materials include an 8-minute film of the same name and related discussion questions and activity suggestions that are designed to encourage students to work together to commemorate 9/11 by participating in acts of service. The film describes, through first-person accounts, the various ways that eight individuals, including Winuk, chose to respond to 9/11 through acts of service and volunteerism. The materials can be accessed at national911memorial.org.

Many national nonprofits have joined the movement to build support for the 9/11 observance led by MyGoodDeed. Besides the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and leading 9/11 support groups, these organizations include AARP, America’s Promise Alliance, American Red Cross, BeTheChange, CauseCast, City Year, DoSomething.org, Points of Light Institute/HandsOn Network, ServiceNation, and Youth Service America. This coalition has pledged to work together to organize the single largest day of service in U.S. history planned for the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in 2011.

A new website was launched to support this initiative at 911dayofservice.org and video archives, lesson plans, as well as a downloadable widget that enables individuals to post their 9/11 plans on any Facebook or Google page, website or blog. Individuals interested in finding volunteer opportunities in their area can search by zip code. Visitors to the newly-opened 9/11 Memorial Preview Site in lower Manhattan will have the opportunity to pledge to volunteer or perform good deeds through onsite kiosks.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is the not-for-profit corporation created to realize the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center site. The organization is responsible for raising the funds and overseeing the design for the project and will program and operate the Memorial & Museum located on 8 of the 16 acres of the site.

The Memorial will remember and honor the thousands of people who died in the horrific attacks of February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001. The design, created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, consists of two pools that reside in the footprints of the original Twin Towers, surrounded by a plaza of oak trees. The Arad/Walker design was selected from a design competition that included more than 5,000 entrants from 63 nations.

The Memorial Museum will display monumental artifacts associated with the events of September 11, while presenting intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning and recovery that are central to telling the story of September 11 and its aftermath. It will communicate key messages that embrace both the specificity and the universal implications of the events of 9/11; document the impact of those events on individual lives, as well as on local, national, and international communities; and explore the continuing significance of these events for our global community.

Donations can be made through and more information can be found at the Memorial & Museum’s website, http://www.national911memorial.org/, or by calling 1-877-WTC-GIVE.

HEARTS AND HANDS UPDATE 7/31

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Dear Friend,

In 2001 we made a commitment to assist 9/11 families in any way we could.

For eight years we have tried to keep that commitment and have worked hard to keep you informed and help you through a very difficult time.

We have also listened to your concerns and believe that we have come up with a plan that will honor the memory of your loved ones by celebrating their lives through our Hearts and Hands Memorial.

By creating a permanent home for the United in Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt along with a Corridor of Memories and a 21,000 square foot Memorial Garden we hope to create a peaceful and serene location where visitors will be able to quietly remember their loved ones.

Our recording studio will enable you to add personal stories about your loved ones or listen to stories others have recorded.

Our educational programs will take a positive and proactive approach to instill a sense of goodness and decency in our youth while documenting all the events related to 9/11.

Our Corridor of Memories will be filled with photos supplied by you with the names of your loved ones displayed as requested by you. It will also honor all of those who have died as a result of 9/11

While we are receiving some governmental support we need your help in making this a reality.

Our goal is to have this completed in time for the 10th anniversary.

To that end we are hoping that you will become a benefactor by committing to support this effort over the next two years.

At this time we are asking for a small tax deductible contribution of whatever you can afford.

We are developing giving programs to get people involved at all levels in 2010 but for now we need to know we have your support.

We are working on plans to have the quilt displayed at Ground Zero over the weekend of September 11th and hope that you will take a few moments to experience the love that went into this 16,000 square foot memorial.

Most importantly we hope that you will spread the word about the Hearts and Hands Memorial to all your family and friends.

If you would like a copy of our brochure please respond to this e-mail with your mailing address.

For more information visit our website at www.where-to-turn.org

Thank you in advance for your support.
