9/11 MEDIA REQUEST
Sunday, September 27th, 2009Dear 9/11 Family Members:
We have been asked by the BBC to catch up with some of the young people who were unfortunate enough to experience 9/11 as children, in order to find out directly from them how they feel these events have shaped the course of their lives. Sadly, eight years on support groups for 9/11 families say that funding and resources are starting to run dry. We hope that a project such as this might encourage a continuation of support by demonstrating the ongoing need of those who were affected, but also the many different ways in which young people have managed to turn these experiences into something positive.
We are looking to speak to anyone who was under the age of 18 at the time of 9/11 and was directly affected by the attacks in some way. This is a great opportunity for you to have your say on what the long-term emotional effects of 9/11 have been for you as a young person, and tell us how they have influenced and even inspired you to live the rest of your life.
To narrow things down a bit, there are several categories of young person who we are particularly interested in speaking to:
- Those who have decided to use their experiences to help others. Have you become involved in fundraising or charity work of some kind? Or maybe you now work as a mentor or counselor to other bereaved or emotionally distressed children.
- Those who are preparing for an event or challenge of some kind. This would help us to understand how what you experienced in early life has influenced you to cope with the future that lies ahead. Are you getting ready for your prom or graduation? Are you planning to take part in some kind of competition? Perhaps after losing a parent your mom or dad is planning to remarry and you’re not sure how to feel about this. Maybe you’re about to embark upon a certain career inspired by what happened? Or are you planning some sort of special trip or journey, perhaps even to visit Ground Zero for the first time.
- It goes without saying that all those affected will still be working through the emotional repercussions of that day. However, we would also like to talk to those whose lives are still very much in the grip of 9/11. This could be for a number of reasons. Perhaps you are still coping with anxiety, a phobia or depression as a result of what happened. Or maybe you are caring for a parent who is living with an ongoing physical disability or emotional problems.
If you or anyone you know would like to speak to us, in complete confidence and without judgement, then please get in touch anytime by emailing me at jess.colmer@prospect-uk.com, or by calling me on either of the numbers below.
I look forward to hearing from you.
