Get Community Service Credit

Where to Turn will be partnering with the New York Blood Center in an attempt to increase blood donations on Staten Island by granting community service credit hours to students who donate or recruit others to donate.

Students will receive 1 hour of community service credit if they donate blood or for each person referred by them who donates.

Students will receive 2 hours of community service credit each time they donate platelets or recruit someone who donate platelets.

We will also award 2 hours of community service credit to any high school senior who registers as a bone marrow donor. (MUST BE 18 OR OLDER)

We will track donations by school and at the end of the year schools with the most donations and community service hours for this project will be recognized. (1 point for each hour of community service credit or pint donated)

Schools that run blood drives will receive an additional 50 points.

Students can also receive community service credit by volunteering at

JD’S 6th ANNUAL FOOTBALL SUNDAY

*****THE BIGGEST SUNDAY EVENT OF THE YEAR*****

Sunday, October 12, 2008 - COLUMBUS DAY WEEKEND!

12pm Start (goes all day!)

Level One (Annadale Staten Island )

Update: Raffle tickets are still available! If you would like to buy some or are able to sell some, please send an email to receive them (details below). Thanks!… And again, please FORWARD THIS ON TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY!

Last year was once again the biggest and best JD’s Football Sunday yet- we raised a great amount of money for scholarships to be offered in Joey’s name, we had the largest number of people attend (almost 300!) and most of all we had a great time in honor of Joey!!! Football on the TVs, a DJ all day long, plenty of great food and drinks- what else could be better? It was a day Joey Doyle would have loved.

JD’s Football Sunday gets bigger & better each year. On this special Sunday, friends from Joey’s life, their friends and people who have heard the hysterical JD stories and may have never been fortunate enough to meet him, join together to make it the best Sunday event of the year. We encourage everyone to pass the word on and bring as many people as you like. One of Joey’s biggest joys was having his friends over to watch football on Sundays.
Now, we celebrate this memory by bringing together EVERYONE we know and throw a party in honor of Joe.

***ONCE AGAIN THIS YEAR WE WILL BE SELLING 50/50 TICKETS IN ADVANCE***
Last year’s winners received almost $2,000 each and the raffle was a huge success- thank you to all that participated. All tickets will be $5. If you can sell tickets at work, to your family and friends, to anyone who might be interested in helping to keep a great person’s memory going, it would help make the day an even bigger success! (now is a good time to get the candy sellers in your office back- ha!).

You do not have to be present to win a prize.

Everything we raise is donated to the Joseph Doyle Memorial Scholarship Fund and all contributions are tax deductible. An EIN WILL BE PROVIDED To anyone .\

We will also be selling tickets on Oct. 12 - the winners are picked at the end of the 1:00 games. Like last year, we hope to have some big items to be auctioned off the at the event as well- we will keep you posted to that as well as more raffle details.
Please reply to this email with your address to send the tickets if you are interested in helping us sell some raffle tickets.

Attached is a new UPDATED flyer to provide you with some more details. Football jerseys are the preferred choice of wardrobe- if not, just show up for a great time.

WE MUST NEVER FORGET

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Seven years ago tonight this country went to bed as it had every night before.

Some people worried about pressing deadlines at their jobs.

Some kids worried about upcoming tests in schools.

Schedules to keep, things to do, people to meet, vacations or weddings to plan.

Good thoughts, issues, or future plans swirled around in many minds as America drifted off to sleep.

Nearly 3,000 of whom never realized that it would be for the last time

For everyone else life would never be the same.

Fear would become a part of our life every day.

Worries about our jobs were replaced by worries for our lives.

Students’ worries about tests were replaced with worries about their parents coming home.

Plans were scrapped, vacations cancelled and for the first time fear became a part of our every day life.

Terrorism was never really a major concern for Americans.

It was always somebody else’s problem.

It appeared September 11th 2001 had changed everything.

Seven years later, and for many, things are back to normal and many people are sleeping easier once again..

Airlines seem more concerned with charging for extra bags then they are about security.

Vacation plans are determined by gas prices and the state of the economy not fear of terrorists.

Elected officials are telling 9/11 families that they need to move on.

Some teachers are even being told not to mention 9/11 in their classrooms.

Homeland Security appears to have been relegated to the back seat.

While we defend the people in Afghanistan and Iraq against terrorists we seem to have forgotten security here at home.

Forgotten that tomorrow is the 7th Anniversary of the murder of 2,975 at the hands of terrorists

Forgotten that hundreds have died and continue to die as a result of the attacks

Forgotten that the terrorists are very patient and will lay in wait.

Wait for us to get complacent and lower our guard.

Wait for us to stop worrying.

Wait for us to forget how we felt on September 11th 2001.

And then they will strike again.

The best way to honor our lost loved ones is to assure that this does not happen.

We must not drop our guard.

We must remember that the threat still exists and that it is real.

We must “Never Forget”

Protect Health of 9-11 Responders Press Conference 9/8

News Conference - MONDAY, September 8th at 10:00 a.m.

Reps. Maloney, Nadler Urge Action to Protect Health of

9-11 Responders from Around the Country Health

New York, NY – On Monday, September 8th at 10:00 a.m., U.S. Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Jerrold L. Nadler (D-NY), will hold a news conference to express their concerns about ongoing delays in the federal government’s program to provide health care to 9/11 responders and others sickened by the attacks who live outside the New York metropolitan area.

In June, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) awarded a contract to Logistics Health Incorporated (LHI), a Wisconsin firm run by former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson, to coordinate 9/11 medical monitoring and treatment services nationwide. On September 4th, Representatives Maloney, Nadler and Fossella sent a letter to HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt noting that LHI’s monitoring exams have not yet begun as orginally promised; that many, if not most, responders eligible for the program have yet to receive any information from LHI; and that sick responders are experiencing significant delays in getting appointments arranged, prescriptions filled, and phone calls returned.

WHO: U.S. Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney, Jerrold L. Nadler

WHAT: Protesting the U.S. government’s delays and inaction in meeting the health care needs of 9/11 responders from outside the New York metropolitan region

WHEN: Monday, September 8th at 10:00 a.m

WHERE: In front of 7 World Trade Center, Greenwich & Vesey Streets, Lower Manhattan

Invitation to attend meeting with 9/11 prosecution team in VA

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Dear 9/11 Families,

Last week I sent out an email to the families of FL 77, FL 93 and the Pentagon inviting them to a meeting on September 10th, 10 a.m. here in Washington D.C. We wanted to meet with these families in anticipation that many of them would be in Washington DC for the Pentagon Memorial Dedication on September 11th.

If any of our 9/11 families, including the WTC families, are in the area, please feel free to RSVP to attend this meeting. We assumed that our WTC families would be in NYC that day, but did not want to exclude anyone from attending. We are planning to meet with you at the CCTV sites later in September, and trying to find dates that do not conflict with our required travel to GTMO. You’ll hear from us shortly on those meetings.

The purpose of this meeting on September 10th is to allow you to meet the 9/11 prosecution team, to ask questions about commissions, and to give us an opportunity to hear your concerns.

We will meet at 2521 South Clark St., Suite 755, Arlington VA 22202. This location is down the street from the Crystal City Metro stop on the blue and yellow lines. I will meet you in the lobby of the building, sign you in, and escort you up to the conference room. If a very large number of you RSVP we will have to move the location of the meeting. Please RSVP by COB Weds, Sept 3rd if you wish to attend.

Have a safe holiday weekend. We look forward to meeting you. As always, please call me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,

Karen Loftus
