Program Needs Student Volunteers To Help Shovel Paths Of Seniors

As the autumn weather slowly chills to winter, ice and snowfall are already on the minds of many Staten Island seniors.

Every year, the group Where to Turn sets out to make sure there’s a team of student volunteers to help seniors shovel their paths.

As of now, there are more than 2,000 Island seniors signed up for the service, and not enough helping hands.

“They’ve worked their entire lives,” said Dennis McKeon of Where To Turn. “A lot of them are in their 80s or in their 90s, they just can’t do this anymore. And just for the fact that they know there’s somebody out there that’s going to help them out it makes a big difference in their lives.”

Students are assigned to one senior citizen that lives nearby his or her home. The student must be 13 years old and will receive community service for helping out.

NYC is offering training on new building codes that are going into effect July 1, 2008.

They are publicizing these new codes on the Lower Manhattan Info website at

Now heres the kicker.

The rebuilding of the WTC is the largest construction project in Lower Manhattan.

But they do not have to abide by the new or old codes because the site is exempt.

Only in NYC.
