What: Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Spitzer have not issued a formal response to our request asking them to reconsider their decision to relocate the Sept. 11, 2007 memorial service to Zuccotti plaza. Therefore, 9/11 families will file for a permit with the Port Authority to stage our own anniversary ceremony at the World Trade Center site. In a poll published in today’s Crain’s, over 72% of respondents support our efforts to halt construction at the World Trade Center site on September 11, 2007, so that the annual memorial service can return to the sacred site.

Since September 11, 2002, there has never been construction activity at the World Trade Center site on September 11th. Therefore, as America watches this year, we trust that Governor Spitzer, the Port Authority, and City of New York will honor that five-year precedent and declare a moratorium on any construction on the sacred ground on September 11, 2007.

Our action is not to be considered a boycott of the City’s ceremony, for we have a duty to gather together each year at the World Trade Center site on September 11th to honor our nation’s 2,750 victims. But we also have a duty to participate in an authentic and meaningful ceremony, and will therefore advance plans to stage our own anniversary ceremony at the site. We continue to encourage officials to meet with us to discuss our viable and preferred alternative to their plans.

When: Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at NOON

Where: In front of the downtown NYC offices of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at 115 Broadway.
