IS THE IFC MAKING A COMEBACK?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

On September 6, 2005 a media release was sent out from the International Freedom Center announcing the new members to the family advisory committee. The following was included in the release

The International Freedom Center is envisioned as an integral part of the living memorial to September 11 at the World Trade Center site. It shares the mission of the World Trade Center Memorial to “strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance, and intolerance.”

The Center is built on a view of freedom as a world historical movement in which America has played a leading role. The story of freedom is a narrative of hope. September 11 is an essential element of this story, powerfully illustrating that new challenges to freedom will always arise, that freedom’s work remains unfinished, and that there is a place for all of us in this work.

The Center carries on its own work through three major components:

Ø Museum exhibition spaces: will tell personal stories and explore crucial themes in the history of freedom, detailing the contributions of countless individual women and men, including the heroes of September 11, around the world who have made a difference to its cause.

Ø An educational and cultural center: will sponsor an extensive array of lectures, symposia, discussions, films, and other events in its theaters and public halls that will nurture a respectful and positive global conversation on freedom in our world today.

Ø A service and civic engagement network: will offer visitors opportunities to act in freedom’s service in their own communities and around the world.

Just a few days ago a WTC Memorial Foundation Press Release was sent out that included the following

The Museum will communicate key messages that embrace both the specificity and the universal implications of the events of 9/11; document the impact of those events on individual lives, as well as on local, national, and international communities; and explore the legacy of 9/11 for a world increasingly defined by global interdependency.

It appears that the WTC Memorial is morphing into the International Freedom Center.

It is amazing that we cannot get the Foundation to properly display the names of the victims, that we had to fight for over a year to get the names above ground but the IFC, something that we had specifically removed from the plans, is basically what the Memorial is becoming.

We are not the only ones that fell this way as Debra Burlingame has pointed out;

Thought you should all see the latest press release from the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation on the occasion of a donation made in memory of the 33 flight crew members who perished on four airplanes. While it includes a statement that the foundation has a “sacred obligation” to “forever remember the courage displayed that day,” it is deeply sad to me that the public will have to guess who the 33 crew members actually are. Identifying them and associating them to the specific airline flights on which they perished is seen by this same foundation as somehow detracting from the more important artistic concept of “randomness death.”

Note also that some of the key supporters of the International Freedom Center appear to be making a come-back, reviving their internationalist, why-do-they-hate us agenda. An alarming paragraph in today’s press release:

The Museum will communicate key messages that embrace both the specificity and the universal implications of the events of 9/11; document the impact of those events on individual lives, as well as on local, national, and international communities; and explore the legacy of 9/11 for a world increasingly defined by global interdependency.

Remember, folks, the museum was been sold to us as being “of a piece” with the memorial, i.e. making up for the memorial’s glaring absence of any historic narrative, either about what actually occurred on September 11, 2001 (including a simple inscription with that date) or the deeds of those who died or survived. Now, that narrative and history will have to share space with the global interdependency crowd. But what, exactly, does that mean in terms of exhibits and educational programming? This needs to be clarified.

We agree that this issue needs to be clarified, addressed and corrected.

LETTER RE: HR BILL 1/S 4

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Dear 9/11 Families:

This is a head’s-up to make sure everyone is aware of the bill pending in
Congress that will implement many of the remaining 9/11 Commission
recommendations. We have been working with members of both parties in the
House and Senate, with 9/11 Commissioners and the White House for passage of
this critical legislation (H.R.1/S.4).

This bill will soon enter the ‘conference’ phase of legislation, followed by
passage by Congress in early July. The step after that will be the
President’s signature. Although the President has made his opposition known
because of some items in the bill, an effort is being made by all parties to
find acceptable compromises to avoid a veto and possible derailment of this
bill. We recognize the need for some, but not all of the compromises and in
meetings with members of Congress and the White House, and through letters
and statements, we have demanded strong legislation that will effectively
implement the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations*.

We will continue to work closely with Congresssional leadership and the
White House on this important matter and will let you know where, when and
how you can help should there be a veto crisis. However, we sincerely hope
that in this instance, there will be a strong bill, no veto and swift
enactment. Sometimes government works the way it should, when citizens and
public servants work together.

*The declassification of the Inspector General’s report of the CIA described
in the recent “Action Alert” by the September 11th Advocates is just one of
the many provisions in the above bill. When enacted, it will implement
sweeping reforms, from air cargo inspection, to risk-based DHS funding, to
loose nukes containment, better VISA screening, to an independent civil
liberties oversight panel, to list just a few of the many reasons why your
support on this bill is vital.

Update on the Vandalism at Postcard’s Memorial

Monday, June 25th, 2007

To All,I just spoke to Michele and as can be expected she is very upset. She wanted to let you know that back on April 3, a friend of hers took two out of town friends to see Postcards.

She received a call that Jason’s plaque was cracked and she immediately reported it to the Borough President’s office.

She said that their office was very concerned and responsive and stated that they would look into the matter.

Very shortly she received a call back and was informed that Jason’s plaque was cracked but that it appeared to be the result of the weather and not an act of vandalism.

She was also told that it would be taken care of.

She did not hear anything back and assumed that the plaque would be repaired.

Last week she received a call from her uncle to tell her that it was still cracked and then today she heard from various media outlets that the memorial had indeed been vandalized and that pieces of Jason’s plaque along with a few others had been removed and tossed about the area.

She of course does not understand how someone would do such a thing and wants to let everyone know that Postcards is very special to the 9/11 families of Staten Island.

She hopes that this is just a random act from someone who is not in control of their senses and also hopes that whoever committed this act of vandalism is apprehended soon.

This is sacred ground and the memory of Jason as well as all of those depicted on Postcards has been injured by this heinous act.

Michele also wanted to let everyone know that she is in no way criticizing the way the Borough President’s office has handled this and is very appreciative of all that he has done for the families including the construction of the Postcard’s Memorial.

NY POST’S PHIL MUSHNICK ON THE AAC

Monday, June 25th, 2007

From NY Post 6/25

Kevin Collins is a retired cop, ex-PSAL basketball coach and current adjunct professor at St. John’s-Staten Island. Collins and I have long shared a gripe: Superior high school athletes who are poor students are far more often celebrated, especially by the media, than are the top students in the same school.

So this past Wednesday on the SJU-SI campus, with the help of Dennis McKeon’s Where To Turn organization, Collins led the annual Academic All-County Award salute to S.I. kids who maintained a 90-and-above average their junior and senior years while playing a varsity sport. Sweet.

MISPLACED PRIORITIES AT GROUND ZERO

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Below please find a letter from the WTC Memorial Foundation asking for donations while professing eco-friendly design.

Interesting that they are quick to tout the eco friendly design but they have steadfastly refused to address the safety issues as the entire site continues to be built exempt from NYC Building and Fire codes.

Once again their priorities continue to be misplaced.

Put It Above Ground

Protecting our environment is a concern that we all share, which is why the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation is committed to building a lasting memorial which helps to safeguard the sustainability of New York City’s future.
I’m proud to report to you that our project will be at the forefront of eco-friendly design, construction, and operations, satisfying New York State and World Trade Center Sustainable Design Guidelines. We are also well on the way to achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the Memorial, Museum, and Museum Pavilion.
Innovative methods are being used to ensure the sustainability of the World Trade Center site. State-of-the-art irrigation, storm water harvesting and integrated management systems will conserve energy, water and material resources. The storm water recycling itself will increase the life expectancy of the Memorial’s oak trees — a symbol of life and longevity on the Plaza — from the average of seven to ten years for most urban trees to 50 to 70 years.
Recently, New York City Mayor and WTC Memorial Foundation Chairman Michael R. Bloomberg announced a visionary plan to enhance New York City’s environment, including increasing access to open space and adding hundreds of thousands of trees to the City. The Memorial Plaza, filled with more than 330 towering oak trees, will help contribute to that plan for a “greener New York. The Plaza will add six acres of vibrant and sustainable open space for visitors to the Memorial, office workers enjoying their lunchtime breaks, and residents who will benefit from the addition of a large urban forest to their neighborhood.
This site is dedicated to preserving memory, but in doing so we are also committed to preserving the environment and enhancing the quality of life for future generations. Thank you for your ongoing support which is making our vision for a “green memorial a reality.
