5 Years Later and Still No Answers

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

For the past 5 years we have been asking questions about the recovery effort at Ground Zero. For the past 5 years we have been ignored and our questions have gone unanswered.

Below are some of the postings from the Where to Turn and Put It Above Ground web sites from the past 6 months.

On April 26 the Medical Examiners sent out a notice that included the statement that 842 remains (did not indicate from the new or old search) that had been retested had been matched to previously identified remains. We have a considerable distribution with the 9/11 families we are also in constant touch with other major family groups and we have not been notified from one family member who was notified that additional remains were identified.

Add this to the fact that the mayor’s office has not told us how many, if any, of the over 1,400 remains recovered over the past year have been tested.

Diane once again raises the point about personal items recovered during the new search.

We have not been notified that any items have been sent to the NYPD Property Department.

All we know is that it has been alleged that nearly $1 Million and thousands of items from the original search have gone missing.

We also know for a fact that there is an inventory system that could lay these allegations to rest and also help identify remains that is not being used.

We hope that you join with us as we stand with the Hornings and demand that the Mayor’s Office answer these questions.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS FROM HORNINGS RE: REMAINS

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Mr. Holloway,
I cannot understand why we have not received at least a partial response to our questions. I am especially upset that we do not know what (if any) training is given to people working on the actual site. What qualifies them to recognize human remains? How does what is now taking place differ in any way from a mere “scoop and dump” operation? The discoveries do not seem to be made on site but rather in Brooklyn where they have been dumped after having been “scooped.”
Rather than helping us understand the situation surrounding discovery and identification, we have been left with even more questions. Have any remains been identified from those found since September 2005? bIf not, why not? Has any personal property found since September 2005 been returned to families? Was there a suitcase recently found on a ledge of the 130 Liberty Street building? If so, was it returned to a family? If not, what was found on that ledge? And, finally, why isn’t there more effort to answer our questions in a timely and respectful way? We deserve better treatment.

Diane Horning

Ms. Horning—

I’m working on the response. It’s not difficult—but we want to make sure that all the facts are right. I expect to back to you shortly.

Dear Mr. Holloway,
Below is the message I sent to you following our April 27th meeting. You responded that it had been received and that you would have no trouble getting the answers to these questions. To date I have had no further response. In addition, at that same meeting I had asked what the “protocols” were for training people working at the WTC site and its surroundings as they search for new remains. I have not had an answer to that question either. Are they given any training at all? I look forward to a timely response to these questions.

Sincerely,

Diane Horning

Dear Mr. Holloway,

Thank you for taking the time to address the following questions. You indicated at our meeting on Friday, April 27, 2007 that there should be no problem in gathering the answers. I look forward to your response.

1. Regarding the NYC Medical Examiner’s facility: how many full-time people are working on the identification?
a. what do they do?
b. what are their credentials?
c. how much time is being devoted to this project (identification, not recovery)?

2. Regarding Bode: how many full-time people are working on the identification?
a. what do they do?
b. what are their credentials?
c. how much money is included in the contract for Bode’s services?
d. Is there a time limit to this contract?

3. Regarding Gene Code:
a. has there been a new contract with Gene Code to upload DNA profiles?
b. why was this necessary?
c. how much money has been contracted for this service?
d. how much time and man power can be expected for this amount of money?

Should other questions arise, I will contact you. I am very grateful for your time and effort.

Sincerely,

Diane Horning

Hearts and Hands Memorial Project Update 5/28

Monday, May 28th, 2007

To All,

We have found a possible location for our Memorial Complex that we believe will offer 9/11 families the solace that they are looking for and remind everyone of how America came together after the tragic events of 9/11.

We are currently looking to renovate buildings on Staten Island to create

An exhibition hall with over 9,000 square feet of open floor space that will house the 16,000 square foot United in Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt

A Corridor of Memories over 250 feet long (nearly 3,000 square feet) that will include photos of all of the victims of the attacks and will include affiliation, age and location on 9/11.

The ceiling of the corridor will be constructed with curved plexi-glass and will have the names of all of the victims etched into it in a completely random fashion.

Between the exhibition hall and corridor of memories will be a 21,000 square foot Memorial Garden.

The Garden will act as an oasis not only for 91// families but for anyone who needs a quiet place to contemplate and reflect.

The world came together after 9/11 in a way that it never had before.

We want this complex to be a reminder of the outpouring of love and brotherhood that followed the tragic events of 9/11.

We want our children and their children to remember not only those that were lost but also the unprecedented outreach that followed.

Future phases of the complex will include:

A 9/11 Memorial Museum

A Public Library

A Veteran’s Center

A Senior/Youth Center

All of these are existing buildings that have fallen into terrible disrepair and will need extensive renovation.

We feel that the Survivor’s Staircase would be a welcomed addition to this complex and could become a permanent component.

We are currently in the planning stages and would be open to working the Staircase into our plans.

Working with the Joseph Maffeo Foundation and United in Memory we hope to fill the void left in our world, by the passing of our loved ones, we are taking a positive, proactive approach - instilling goodness and decency in our world so that all who were lost will always be our beams of light towards a better tomorrow.

We plan to include educational programs and incorporate a mobile computer lab which will allow family members to record their memories. It will also be used to bring computer access to disadvantaged students and seniors throughout Staten Island.

Of course we are still in the infancy stage but have gotten positive responses from most government officials.

We are putting together a business plan and will arrange for engineers to evaluate the space and more accurately estimate the costs.

This project will require significant funding and we will be reaching out for private, governmental and corporate support.

We would appreciate your feedback.

Please pass this on to any interested parties.

If you or your organization is interested in becoming part of this we need to know as soon as possible.

We are in need of corporate and private sponsorship.

If there is interest they can contact me at 718-619-2371.

We will keep you posted as to our progress.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Dennis McKeon

ONE VETERAN’S STORY

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Dear Dennis,  In the wake of the fiasco at Walter Reed, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson established The Advisory Committee on OIF/OEF Veterans and Families. The Commission was tasked with making recommendations for improving the care and benefits service members receive when they come home. On Tuesday, I was fortunate enough to address the Commission on behalf of IAVA1, and I took the opportunity to talk about Sergeant First Class Drew Brown.

Drew Brown served in Fallujah, Taji, Baghdad and Baquba as an advisor to the newly formed Iraqi Army. When he got home in October 2005, he struggled with anxiety, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Over time, he became suicidal.  He says,  One night while my wife slept only feet from me, I came to the conclusion that she would not be able to stop me if I chose to end my life.  With the speed and accuracy of my years handling weapons, I could easily load a magazine, chamber a round, remove the safety and squeeze the trigger before she even got out of bed.  I could taste the Hoppe’s #9, feel the front sight post as it pressed against the roof of my mouth.

Luckily, Drew did not act on his impulses that night.  Instead, he kept trying to get the help he needed.  But again and again, the Department of Defense and the VA failed to heed his call for help.   Drew tried to schedule an appointment with the VA, only to be told he would have to wait three weeks, and schedule his appointment between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, at a hospital that was an hours’ drive away.  Drew couldn’t afford to take three or four hours off work each week to attend a counseling appointment.

The Pentagon was supposed to be keeping track of veterans like Drew though the Post Deployment Health Readiness Assessment form or PDHRA.  But Drew filled out the PDHRA form and asked for help from a mental health professional five times.  When he finally did get a follow-up call, more than sixteen months had passed since his return from Iraq.   Thankfully, Drew is now regularly seeing a VA psychiatrist.  But he says he still hasn’t been given the number of a 24-hour suicide hotline. Fortunately, Drew went above and beyond to get the care he needed. But most veterans won’t be so pro-active.  And the ones who aren’t seeking help are often the ones most in need of care. Each year, approximately 115,300 veterans attempt suicide. That’s about 1 in 5 suicide attempts nationwide.

Last week, IAVA officially endorsed legislation2 introduced by Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia, calling for the creation of a national veteran’s suicide prevention hotline. The bill is making its way through the House, and we will be pushing to get it passed. We’re also working on a bill (H.R. 67) which will improve the outreach activities of the Department of Veterans Affairs, so that people like Drew don’t get lost in the shuffle. Over the next few weeks, IAVA Legislative Director Patrick Campbell and I will be working hard on these issues in IAVA’s Washington, D.C. office. Keep an eye on http://www.iava.org/ to find out how you can help.

With engaged people like you behind us, we are making our voices heard in Washington, and important changes are underway.  Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely, Todd Bowers
Iraq Veteran

Eulogy for a Veteran

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
