14 YEARS LATER AND WE HAVE LEARNED NOTHING
Â
26 February 2007 marks the 14th anniversary of the Islamic terrorist bombing at the World Trade Center that killed 6 people and injured another 1,042 people.
We apparently learned nothing from that attack and everyone knows what happened 8 years later.
Whatever happened to learning by one’s mistakes?
Here we are 14 years after the first attack and over 5 years from 9/11/01 and we are still finding remains.
Just today of the 14 anniversary of the 93 attack it was announced that another 36 remains were found in the haul road over the past 5 days.
The rebuilding continues and the price tag continues to spin out of control but no effort is being made to insure the safety or security of the new buildings.
The construction continues outside the jurisdiction of the NYC Building and Fire Codes.
Nobody even mentions the Kallstrom memo any longer or the fact that none of those security issues have been addressed.
The Memorial Foundation continues to ignore the wishes of the family when it comes to the listing of the names.
A Memorial that was to represent the “cradle of democracy will have its museum still buried underground and not even include an American flag.
The medical needs of many of those who responded to the attacks are still being ignored.
Government employees are being forced to occupy space in the new buildings to justify their existence.
Human remains continue to be lost under the area surrounding Ground Zero and at Fresh Kills.
The design of the new transit hub will soon take away most of the area surrounding these two voids that somehow are supposed to represent the towers.
But politicians both current and future will use the attacks for their political gain.
Only addressing the needs of the victims and their families when it is in their best interest.
A very sad commentary indeed.
So today we say a prayer for
John DiGiovanni
Robert Kirkpatrick
Stephen Knapp
William Macko
Wilfred Mercado
Monica Rodriguez Smith (and her unborn child)
And we apologize to the 2,979 who died on 9/11.
And we renew our pledge to continue to fight until all of the issues above are resolved.
For unlike our elected officials we have learned from our mistakes.
Put It Above Ground
