HUMAN REMAINS UPDATE 10/31 9:00 PM

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

No remains were recovered today as they continued to sift through fresh fill. The total remains count was actually lowered to 199 as testing determined that 2 of the bone fragments were animal not human. There will meeting tomorrow to discuss moving the testing operation off site. There are now concentrating on getting Pier space in the city and away from Floyd Bennet.

One of the reasons behind moving it off site is that with construction continuing they actually do not have enough space for a proper testing facility to be set up.

The current plan is to continue through Saturday and to be complete with this section of the search by the end of next week.

There is also talk about then taking a two week hiatus until the testing facility issue is resolved.

Because there are so many agencies involved there has been some infighting.

There are also concerns that the DEP is concentrating their testing on asbestos while workers are concerned with

Heavy metals

PCP’s

Volatiles

The workers want to know what they are dealing with so that they know that they are using the proper safeguards.

The DEP insists the current gear is adequate.

We have recently found out that there is a link to the illnesses that some of the WTC recovery workers have encountered with a genetic disorder.

This condition called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency increases the risk of COPD and lung disease when combined with environmental factors (smoke particles etc)

A simple blood test would determine if any of the new workers have this deficiency and if they do they should not be working on the recovery effort.

Other Issues

Even though there have been WTC items found in the fill under the service road they currently are not planning to excavate it. Instead they are planning to drill pilot test holes.

The reason they are not proceeding with the excavation of the road is that the Port Authority is stating that the road is necessary to continue the construction work.

The bottom line is since WTC items have been found the road should be excavated. Once again this should not be about reconstruction it should not be about money it should be about the proper recovery of remains.

It should also be about holding people responsible. If anything but fresh fill was used on this service road the company contracted to build it should face the appropriate charges.

While we are on the subject of proper recovery efforts I hope that everyone is aware that none of the debris from the basement of St. Nicholas Hellenic Orthodox Church was ever removed.

Anything that was in the basement was left in the basement and the entire location was black topped over.

Even if there were no remains in the basement (how would we know now) we cannot believe that church artifacts might have been buried under when the church was razed and might now be under blacktop.

It is now one thing after another and we are supposed to believe that things will get better.

The only way things will get better is if an outside team of experts is brought in to coordinate the entire effort.

We hope that everyone will join us as we rally on Thursday at 12:30 at Ground Zero to call for that to take place.

By the way no new elected officials have contacted us to support this effort. Hopefully that will change tomorrow.

We will keep you posted.

If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.

“NO MORE”…RALLY FOR A PROPER SEARCH FOR REMAINS 11/2

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006
Greg Smith reported in The Daily News

“If you go back and look, there were so many things going on and the recovery effort was so big, it’s very possible that something slipped through the cracks,” Bloomberg said.

Slipped through the cracks???? Is he kidding? They built a service road on the debris and human remains, knowing full well what was there and then proceeded to drive heavy equipment over it, and them, for five years.

No matter what the stepped-up search is that the mayor is now touting, the process is the same one that neglected the proper search in the first place.

We continue to be grateful to the men and women, both workers and volunteers who worked so hard under inadequate conditions. But, the people in charge are the same ones who didn’t care then, and don’t care now.
With the DDC still in charge, nothing will have changed. This false perception of improvement makes your attendance at Thursday’s rally all the more important. Please come, bring your clergy, your family, your friends, your elected officials.

We must all go on record saying, “NO MORE.” We want a scientific, survey approach for the retrieval of human remains. And we want that team to come from the most knowledgeable and experienced personnel we can get.

What: rally for the proper search for human remains

Who: all of us…showing solidarity. We must show the dead proper respect

When: Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 12:30 pm

Where: On Church Street adjacent to the PATH entrance across from Fulton Street

Wear your purple and black ribbons, carry signs, make your voices heard.

MAYOR’S LATEST PLAN IS NOT ENOUGH

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

The Mayor stated last night;“We think it’ll take a year to go through every single place that was, for reasons good or bad, accidental or deliberate, missed the last time, and we will go through every place so that the families can be assured that to the extent humanly possible, we’ve looked every place as carefully as we possibly could,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “But there’s no guarantee that 10 years from now you wouldn’t find something, that’s just a fact of the size, the magnitude and the complexity of the problem.”While this is a step in the right direction it does not correct the situation. It only includes locations that were on the original search plan. (which we have still not seen)It does not expand the search beyond a few buildings

It does not expand the search above and beyond street level beyond the perimeter of the original search.

It does not have qualified forensic experts conducting the search.

Basically it is not enough.

Please join us at Ground Zero on Thursday November 2, at 12:30 PM as we call for a comprehensive and strategic search for remains conducted by qualified forensic experts to assure that we will not have to worry in ten years that something may have been missed.

UNIONS BACK WORK STOPPAGE AT WTC

Monday, October 30th, 2006

The Chief is reporting

Two uniformed labor leaders who lost members on 9/11 last week urged officials in charge of rebuilding at Ground Zero to stop construction until a renewed search for missing body parts in the area is finished.

Let’s hope that the mayor listens and remembers what he said at Gound Zero on 9/11/03

“They were our neighbors, our husbands, our children, our sisters, our brothers, and our wives. They were our countrymen, and our friends. They were us.”

We say

They still are and we will not rest until a proper and comprehensive search is completed.

FIRE DEPARTMENT MEETING ON REMAINS 11/1 7:30 PM

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Dear 9/11 Families:

The Fire Department will be hosting a meeting this week to let you know more about the current search process at the World Trade Center site.

The meeting is especially intended for families who have not had a recovery or have had only a partial recovery.

You are invited to come to the Fire Academy on Randall’s Island on Wednesday evening, November 1. The family meeting will be in the main Auditorium and will begin at 7:30 PM. There is plenty of parking at the Academy.

Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano, who has been the Fire Department’s representative on the Mayor’s task force, and a staff member from the Medical Examiner’s team working on identifications at the site will speak and answer questions.

This meeting is for Fire Department families. It won’t be open to the public, the media or other groups who have had losses. You will need to show your FDNY identification to be admitted. The meeting is for adults. It isn’t intended for children or teens.

As time is short and we know that some people don’t have email or open their email regularly we are asking for your help in being sure that the other members of your family know about the meeting. Please give them a call.

If you are close to other 9/11 families could you give them a check-in call as well? Our parents ask that you speak directly to them and not leave messages about things like this on answering machines that could be heard by children or teens

With thanks for your help and warm regards in this difficult time,

Advocates For A 9/11 Fallen Heroes Memorial

HUMAN REMAINS UPDATE 10/30 6:00 PM

Monday, October 30th, 2006

No remains were found today as they were still searching through “clean fillThey have not begun searching through material removed from any additional manholes as they are waiting for DEP clearance.

All manholes for this search have been exposed and they are looking to dig 5 foot test pits in the remaining manholes either the end of this week or the beginning of next week.

They cannot do any search at this time on one of the two service boxes as it is filled with oil. They have to stabilize it before they can proceed.

They are looking to move the sifting and testing operation off site.

Two of the sites being considered are

Floyd Bennet Field or Pier 40.

We will keep you posted.

GETTING THE WORD OUT

Monday, October 30th, 2006

The story in today’s Daily News about remains uncovered in 2003 being ignored coming on the heals of the report posted here last week that the DEP had ordered the debris removed from the sewers surrounding Ground Zero shortly after the attacks prove that the recomendations presented by the Mayor’s office Friday are inadequate.

The following elected officials have already joined us in our call to bring JPAC or a similar forensic recovery team in to plan and coordinate the search for remains

Senator Hillary Clinton

Senator Charles Schumer

Councilman Alan Gershon

We will continue to post the names of elected officials who support our effort as they sign on. Please keep this in mind when you vote next Tuesday.
