10,000 and Going Strong…. We Need Your Support

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Yesterday we had the 10,000th visit to this site. It appears obvious that there are people out there who are interested in what we have to say.

Each day we try to post at least one item of interest whether it be a letter to the editor, a news article or a commentary.

We have stayed true to our original mission and will continue to do so.

Maintaining and keeping this site up to date unfortunately does require funding.

In order to continue we need your support

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTOPHER

Friday, August 25th, 2006

This Sunday as summer quickly comes to an end many families will be getting in their last bit of summer fun. Maybe a day at the beach, or even a trip to the park. Many on Staten Island will be bringing their kids for a ride on the Carousel at Willowbrook Park.

One person in particular will be making a trip to the Carousel but it will not be to enjoy the day.  You see Sunday would have been Christopher Damiano’s third birthday. Unfortunately he is not here to celebrate this special day. On March 17, 2006 little Christopher was killed when the TV set in his home accidentally fell from its stand. So at 1:00 pm on Sunday Christopher’s mom Kelly will make a trip to the Carousel to celebrate what would have been his third birthday. She will bring balloons and release butterflies to celebrate his short life.

Kelly will not be alone she will be surrounded by family and friends. She will also be joined in spirit by over 25 families who have lost their children in similar accidents over the past 5 years.

Kelly is doing this not only to celebrate Christopher’s birthday but also once again to try to raise public awareness of how Congress continues to ignore the fact that children continue to die in these types of accidents while a bill (HR Bill 1861) that would help prevent them sits stalled in committee ignored by all but 45 members.

Shortly after Christopher’s death we held a press conference at this very Carousel to make others aware and try to get some members of Congress to sign on in support of the bill. Unfortunately all we got were unfulfilled promises that things would be done. Congressional press releases were sent about holding hearings but nothing was done.

We went to our local Senators but nothing was done.

We wrote and faxed every member of Congress and you guessed it nothing was done. Not one member of Congress has signed on as a sponsor since April 27.

And while nothing was being done two more children have died in similar accidents. The sad thing is that had their parents known about HR Bill 1861 or had Congress acted these children might be enjoying a day at the park this Sunday. Instead their parents now only have them in their memories and their hearts.

So this Sunday we will join Kelly and celebrate Christopher’s third birthday. We will also celebrate the short lives of all those lost in these types of accidents and we hope that someone in Congress will have the courage to put political and financial concerns aside and stand up for what is right.

Hopefully someone in Congress will speak on our behalf and get this bill passed. They should know by now that we will not rest until they do.

9/11 TRIBUTE FROM THE UK

PETER MOUNTFORD

WORCESTER
UNITED KINGDOM WR4 9L

9-11 TRIBUTE THRU CONNECTION WITH NYC MARATHON.

IN 2000 I RAN THE NYC MARATHON AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE CITY, SO ON RETURNING HOME I IMMEDIATELY

BOOKED TO GO AGAIN IN 2001. WITH THE EVENTS OF 9-11-2001 I DIDN’T THINK THE RACE WOULD TAKE PLACE,

(NOV 4TH) SO I WAS OVERJOYED THAT RUDY GIULIANI INSISTED THE RACE GO AHEAD. ON ARRIVAL AT

KENNEDY AIRPORT I WAS CALLED TO THE BRITISH AIRWAYS DESK TO BE INFORMED THAT MY MOTHER HAD

DIED AFTER A LONG STRUGGLE WITH CANCER, WHILST I WAS IN THE AIR.

IN THE PREVIOUS WEEKS I KEPT TELLING MY MOM THAT IM NOT GOING TO NEW YORK DUE TO HER POORLY

CONDITION. SHE TOLD ME, “ I KNOW YOUR HEART IS BREAKING BY THE SITUATION, BUT YOU MUST

TRAVEL TO NEW YORK WITH MY BLESSING AND STAND AGAINST TERRORISM AND MAKE YOUR MOTHER

PROUD BY SUPPORTING FREEDOM AND LIBERTY. MY PLANE LEFT LONDON FOR NEW YORK AT 10.00AM (GMT)

SHE DIED 20 MINUTES LATER, A FACT THAT STILL BRINGS A TEAR. SO THERE I AM IN NEW YORK EMOTIONALLY

DEVASTATED TWICE. I SAT ALONE ON THE BACK OF THE BUS TRAVELING FROM KENNEDY TO MANHATTAN.

IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SUNNY DAY JUST LIKE 9-11. I LOOKED OUT OF THE WINDOW STARING NOWHERE IN

PARTICULAR, IN AN EMOTIONALLY SURREAL STATE . THEN CAME THIS WONDERFUL SIGHT IN THE FOREGROUND

THE VAST CEMETERIES OF CALVARY AND MOUNT ZION AT MASPETH AND ON THE HORIZON THE MANHATTAN

SKYLINE, SEEN THRU A KALEIDOSCOPE OF TEARS AND SMILES BECAUSE I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

(DEDICATED TO THE PERSON WHO WAVED THE BATH TOWEL FROM THE TOP FLOOR OF THE NORTH TOWER ON

SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001.)

NOT BEING AMERICAN I CAN GIVE AN OBJECTIVE VIEW, GIVE ME YOUR TIRED AND WEARY FROM THE ELLIS

ISLAND QUEUE . DRIVING IN FROM KENNEDY, THOSE EARLY IMMIGRANTS CROWD THE INTERSTATE.

AT CALVARY AND MOUNT ZION, THEY HAVE CREATED REALITY FROM DREAMS, AND YOUR AT ITS GATE.

GIVE THEM LIBERTY , THE TYPE THAT TYRANNY CONFOUNDS. WHERE PEOPLE ARE FREE WONDERFUL ENERGY

ABOUNDS. THEIR LEGACY TO US ARE THE BUILDINGS THAT STAND. ON THE ISLAND OF THE HILLS SO PROUD

SO GRAND. THE THING THAT GRAPHICALLY ILLUSTRATES THIS SO WELL, SO FINE. IS THAT MAN MADE

GRAPHIC EQUALIZER, THE MANHATTAN SKYLINE. TWO HIGH PEAKS ARE MISSING WHERE SYMBOLS ARE

NORMALLY FOUND. WILL THE HARMONY BE BROKEN THE LOSS SO PROFOUND . IN ITS SPIRITUAL HOME

MR LENNONS IMAGINATION STANDS PROUD AND TALL. FOR NEW YORK A RACIAL LIQUIDIZER , TEACHES

TOLERANCE FOR ALL. MANY YEARS FROM NOW, WHAT WILL 9-11 MEAN , A DATE OF COURSE A NUMBER

PERHAPS. STILL CONNECTING TO THOSE GUYS WEARING NYC DEPARTMENT BASEBALL CAPS.

THE REST OF THE WORLD SINGS A CHORUS FROM THAT OLD SINATRA SONG. ITS UP TO YOU NEW YORK

NEW YORK, WE KNOW IT WONT BE LONG. YOUR TEARS WILL DRY FOR THOSE HEARTS SO BRAVE AND TRUE.

THAT’S WHY THE REST OF THE FREE WORLD LOVES THE RED WHITE AND BLUE.

EVERY YEAR I COME BACK AND RUN THE NYC MARATHON (THIS YEAR NOV 7TH , RACE NUMBER 3794) WITH

A MESSAGE ON MY CHEST IN SUPPORT OF YOUR WONDERFUL CITY. THIS TIME ITS “ NEW YORK….

RUNNING FOR THE UNFORGOTTEN AND THEIR FAMILIES. FINALLY BACK IN ENGLAND THE YANKEES ARE

NOT JUST A BASEBALL TEAM, NOT JUST NEW YORK CITY… BUT THE DEFINITIVE WORD TO DESCRIBE THE

AMERICAN NATION. ON MARATHON DAY ONE MAN WILL PAY HOMAGE TO YOUR UNFORGOTTEN PAST

WITH UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR YOUR DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS IN THE WORLD SERIES OF EVENTS,

BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE BASEBALL TO SAY ………. GO YANKEES!!!!.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

To the editor,                                                                                August 20, 2006

I am one of the family members who listened to the latest tapes released by the FDNY. I lost my brother, FDNY Battalion Chief Orio Palmer on 9//11/01. I am still trying to place in context, the dying words of so many.  What can we learn from this? As I was taking notes while listening, there was a reference from a Captain in the FDNY saying to “keep in mind about the helicopter units that have been trained to do thisâ€?.  These words stayed with me for several days. I finally asked my husband, who is a Lt. in the FDNY for the last 20 years, “where were the helicopters for the FDNY that day? “ To my astonishment he told me there are no helicopters for the FDNY. The Police Dept. sends their helicopters to a scene when needed.  I found it incomprehensible to try and understand WHY there were no knowing and trained eyes in FIRE SAFETY to recognize an imminent or possible collapse in any high rise fire.  Shouldn’t the FDNY have its’ own helicopters?  No firefighters went up in the sky, and the police department could not contact the FDNY to warn them of the imminent danger.  Many of the BRAVE men who died that fateful day were also BETRAYED by the additional– and colossal– communications failures and radio breakdowns that should have been corrected years

earlier.  I would like to sit down with the fire commissioner and once again ask the same question once posed by a reporter, “Now what would Orio Palmer say you need?  Is anyone listening???

The proud warriors of Baker Company wanted to do something to pay tribute To our fallen comrades. So since we are part of the only Marine Infantry Battalion left in **Iraq** the one way that we could think of doing that is By taking a picture of Baker Company saying the way we feel. It would be awesome if you could find a way to share this with our fellow countrymen. I was wondering if there was any way to get this into your papers to let the world know that “WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN” and are proud to serve our country.” Semper Fi 1stSgt Dave Jobe The attached photo was forwarded from one of the last **U.S.** Marine companies in **Iraq**. They would like to have it passed to as many people as possible, to let the folks back home know that they remember why they’re there and that they remember those who’ve been lost.

WTC MEMORIAL FOUNDATION & PA BEGIN CONSTRUCTION

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday, August 17, 2006

WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION AND PORT AUTHORITY BEGIN CONSTRUCTION OF FOOTINGS FOR MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM

The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today began construction of the footings for the Memorial and Museum.  Starting at 7 A.M., construction workers began necessary excavation work to build the foundations for the Memorial and Museum. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is managing the construction of the Memorial and Museum and the Foundation is finalizing the design, planning operations, creating the Museum, and fundraising for the project.

“This is a great step forward for the Memorial, Memorial Foundation Acting President Joe Daniels said. “Over the coming weeks and months, visitors to the site will begin to see the foundations of the Memorial and Museum take shape. A total of 142 footings will be constructed to hold up the structures of the Memorial, the plaza, the Museum, and the Visitor Center. With the 5th anniversary of September 11th approaching, it’s time for the public to join our efforts to build a lasting Memorial by making a contribution in memory of those we lost.

E.E. Cruz of Holmdel, N.J. was awarded a $17 million contract to build the Memorial’s foundations and footings.  The work will be completed within the next year.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, E.E. Cruz and Company was working for Turner Construction in Jersey City, NJ, directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center. Company executives responded by readying supplies, manpower and equipment to help the cause.

Rui Andre, E.E. Cruz’s Equipment Manager and Mark Carlucci, a Local 15 Mechanic and longtime employee, were among the first Company employees to arrive at Ground Zero. They both helped by forming a chain with other E.E. Cruz workmen, passing 5 gallon pails filled with debris that had been removed by hand from the massive pile of rubble.

Later that day under the direction of Bovis, with the help of the Port Authority Police, E.E. Cruz quickly mobilized a flatbed truck with oxygen, acetylene, and burning torches. Six off-road dump trucks, a 245 backhoe with a grapple attachment, and a 980 loader were removed from other jobsites to assist in the clean up effort. Two tractor trailers followed and worked to remove steel beams and other items.

The Company remained on site for several months, assisting the various Construction Managers and government agencies at Ground Zero.  Joseph F. Malandro, Vice President of E.E. Cruz and Company, served on a special slurry wall committee organized by George Tamaro of Muser Rutledge Consulting Engineers in an effort to save the existing slurry wall on site.

Construction of the Memorial began in March with preliminary work to cover the original box beam columns that outline the perimeters of the Twin Towers.  The Memorial is currently on schedule for completion in September 2009.

Last month, the Memorial Foundation and the Port Authority Board of Commissioners agreed to have the Port Authority assume responsibility for construction of the Memorial, the Memorial Museum, and the Visitor Orientation and Education Center.  At that time, the Port Authority Board also agreed to commit up to an additional $95 million toward the Memorial and the Memorial Museum, in addition to a previous commitment of $100 million.  The Memorial Foundation will continue to assume responsibility for the integrity of the project’s design and operation.

In early July, the Foundation launched a national campaign to help raise the remaining $170 million needed for construction and planning of the Memorial and Museum. The Foundation has already raised over $131 million from corporations, foundations, and individuals from all 50 states and 11 different countries.

ABOUT THE PORT AUTHORITY

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates many of the busiest and most important transportation links in the region.  They include John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and Teterboro airports; AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark; the George Washington Bridge and Bus Station; the Lincoln and Holland tunnels; the three bridges between Staten Island and New Jersey; the PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) rapid-transit system; the Port Authority-Downtown Manhattan Heliport; Port Newark; the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal; the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island; the Brooklyn Piers/Red Hook Container Terminal; and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan.  The agency also owns the 16-acre World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.

The Port Authority is financially self-supporting and receives no tax revenue from either state.

ABOUT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION

The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, Inc. is the not-for-profit corporation founded in 2005 to realize the Memorial quadrant at the World Trade Center site.  The Foundation will raise the funds, oversee the design, and operate the Memorial, the Memorial Museum, and a Visitor Orientation and Education Center located on 8 of the 16 acres of the site.

The Memorial will remember and honor the thousands of people who died in the horrific attacks of February 26th, 1993 and September 11th, 2001.  The design, “Reflecting Absence,” created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker consists of two voids that reside in the footprints of the original Twin Towers surrounded by a plaza of oak trees.  The Arad/Walker design was selected from a design competition which included more than 5,000 entrants from 63 nations.

The Memorial Museum will include artifacts, interactive exhibitions, a resource center, contemplative areas, and educational programming which will convey individual and collective stories honoring the memory of the victims and recounting the experiences of survivors, responders, area residents, and witnesses.  The Memorial Museum will help facilitate an encounter with both the enormity of the loss and the triumph of the human spirit that are at the heart of 9/11, as it affirms the courage, compassion, sacrifice and resilience - the best of humanity - demonstrated at a moment of cataclysmic tragedy.

Donations can be made through the Foundation’s website, and more information on the Foundation can be found at http://www.buildthememorial.org/ or by calling 1-877-WTC-GIVE.

A TALE OF TWO CITY PROJECTS

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Dear Editor,

With much fanfare two projects were begun today. In Lower Manhattan the LMDC sent out a press release to announce the footings being set for the WTC Memorial and Museum. At the same time in the Bronx the groundbreaking for the new Yankee Stadium was attended by almost every NYC elected official.

Makes you wonder about priorities. I guess even the politicians, even in an election year, are growing weary of yet another start at Ground Zero. I myself have lost count of the number of groundbreakings we have had at Ground Zero.

If you took a poll of New Yorkers as to which project they think will be completed first, you would be probably find it very difficult to find even one that would put their money on the Memorial.

Just yesterday the papers were filled with articles about how money that was dedicated to the Memorial might have found its way into other projects. That along with the fact that the city has turned over complete control to the Port Authority does not instill any confidence that this project will ever get completed on budget or on time. One only has to look at past Authority projects if they want a little glimpse into the future of Ground Zero.

On the other hand you will see Yankee Stadium completed on time and probably cost the city what the current estimates state. At this point you can actually see a blueprint for what the stadium will look like when completed. Does anyone even have a clue as to what has been decided for the Memorial or the Museum?

The bottom line is we will most definitely see the new Yankee Stadium along with the new Shea Stadium and maybe even the new Net’s complex in Brooklyn before we see a memorial or museum at Ground Zero.

            Sad but true.

At least I will not be afraid to bring my kids to any of these other venues as they will be constructed under the legal jurisdiction of the NYC Building and Fire Departments. The same cannot be said of the memorial and the museum.

To paraphrase Dickens “It was the best of times, in the Bronx, it was the worst of times at Ground Zero.
